Our Lives

Our Voices

What do we talk about?

Just like other Virginians, we want to be in control of where we live. We want to live near the people we love and with people we get along with. We think it is important to live in a place that feels like home. We want to "Show the people in (our) community that (we) are equal neighbor(s) and an important part of your community."

People with disabilities are just like people without disabilities in that we need privacy and the freedom to come and go and we please. We want to live independently.

Some of the housing problems we've experienced are:

  • It's very hard to pay rent and bills on time.
  • There is sometimes a need for some guidance in making safe choices.
  • Our choices about where and with whom we can live are too limited.
  • When we want to move we have to prove that we need to.
  • There are always invasions of our privacy and interruptions to our personal phone calls.
  • We are not allowed to have company when we want like other adults do.
  • Sometimes inappropriate placements endanger others or us.
