Autism and Other Pervasive Developmental Disorders

Autism is one of several disorders classified as Pervasive Developmental Disorders. Individuals with autism often have difficulty communicating and interacting with others, and may show a restricted range of personal interests and activities. The functioning of individuals with autism can vary greatly depending on the individual's age and developmental level. Most experts in the field agree that early intervention is important in providing children with autism the best chance of long-term success. Early intervention may include speech therapy, occupational therapy, or other therapies provided by parents and professionals.
