Technical Assistance Center for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Overview

The Technical Assistance Center for Children Who Are Deaf and Hard of Hearing is funded by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to provide training and technical assistance in the area of deafness and hearing impairment. Assistance is available to local public school systems as well as state-operated programs including early intervention through the Virginia Network of Consultants for Professionals Working with Children Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VNOC) in areas such as: identification, assessment (educational, psychological), communication of children across the spectrum of modalities (listening and spoken language, American Sign Language, Signed English, etc.), specific needs of children with cochlear implants, instructional strategies and amplification.

Major Activities

  • Management and coordination of consultations performed by the Virginia Network of Consultants for Professionals Working with Children Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VNOC)
  • Regional trainings in See-the-Sound Visual Phonics©, as well as awareness, intermediate and tailored professional development on d/hh topics
  • Coordination of professional development in auditory-oral strategies for promoting listening and spoken language skills of children who are d/hh and primarily use listening and spoken language methodology
  • Coordination of annual statewide professional development institute on education of children who are deaf and hard of hearing
  • Revision and update of Virginia Department of Education's (VDOE) Guidelines for Working with Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Virginia Public Schools
  • Collaboration on Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Projects
