Overview

VDOE’s T/TAC at VCU is a specialty center to improve educational opportunities and contribute to the success of children and youth with disabilities (ages birth to 22).

T/TAC assists the VDOE in its work toward the goals of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA). As such, the staff at T/TAC provides high quality personnel development and technical assistance, using research-based, evidenced-based, effective, and/or promising practices designed to build capacity in schools and school division. T/TAC’s aim is to foster students with disabilities access to the general education curriculum, achievement in the least restrictive environment, and knowledge and skills to make progress toward graduation. The T/TAC at VCU serves Superintendent's Regions 1 and 8.

Major Activities

  • Our goal is to improve outcomes for students with disabilities, particularly in the areas of math and reading leading to a higher graduation rate. T/TAC uses a variety of training and technical assistance methods including training, and on-site coaching. Services are focused on schools that are in need of improvement or schools that were denied accreditation or are in warned status by VDOE. In the area of early childhood we provide professional development on evidenced based practices related to a variety of content including inclusive practices, curriculum and instruction and social and emotional competencies. In addition we develop materials and products to improve outcomes for young children with disabilities.

  • Publish the T/TAC E-News Blast monthly.
  • Maintain lending libraries in our regional offices that offer a variety of materials available for loan. These materials include books, DVDs, assessments, curricula, assistive technology and instructional material kits.

Funding Source

  • Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) using federal flow-through funding from IDEA, Parts 611 and 619
